Machia Mullens

Machia Mullens is a law clerk at The Harris Law Firm, where she assists in the development of the firm’s Sports and Entertainment practice. Machia is a Candidate for her JD, planning to sit for the bar exam in July of 2026. Upon graduating from the University of Colorado Law School in May, she will join the firm full-time, working with high school and collegiate athletes on NCAA eligibility, NIL opportunities, and the legal and compliance issues that shape their athletic careers.

Originally from Liberal, Kansas, Machia grew up in highly competitive team environments that emphasized discipline, accountability, and self-advocacy, values that continue to guide her legal work today. While competing as a Division I women’s basketball student-athlete at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, she served as the Summit League Conference Representative on the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In that role, she saw firsthand how policy and regulatory decisions directly impact athletes’ opportunities and futures, sparking her interest in law and advocacy.

Machia graduated from Liberal High School in 2020 and earned her undergraduate degree from UMKC in 2023, completing an accelerated pre-law track that allowed her to begin law school a year early. She is currently a third-year law student at the University of Colorado Law School, where her coursework and professional experience have focused on sports law, NIL, revenue sharing, and compliance. She has worked with multiple law firms on sports-related legal matters, served as a compliance intern within CU’s Athletic Department, and participated in CU Law’s NIL Practicum. She also holds the Athlete Marketing Essentials: NIL Certification from Front Office Sports and is an approved certified NIL agent in the state of Kansas.

Known for her strong research and drafting skills, attention to detail, and clear communication style, Machia brings a thoughtful, organized, and empathetic approach to her work. She is especially committed to helping athletes understand their rights, make informed decisions, and feel confident navigating the business side of sports.

Outside of her legal work, Machia remains closely connected to the athletic community and values opportunities to mentor and support student-athletes as they prepare for success both on and off the court.

Exceptional advocate in a complex, high-conflict case
“I highly recommend Barbara Johnson-Stern. My case was extremely challenging, and she proved to be an outstanding advocate from start to finish. She was able to confidently take on a “bulldog” opposing attorney while remaining professional, strategic, and exceptionally well-prepared. She knows the law, stands her ground, and presents with credibility and confidence in court. Throughout the entire process she was responsive, accessible, and fully engaged in the case. I have worked with many professionals over the years, and her level of preparation, integrity, and effectiveness truly stood out. If you are facing a difficult legal situation and want someone who will advocate for you with skill, professionalism, and results, you will be in excellent hands.”
